Mater Hospital Brisbane (formerly Mater Adult Hospital) is committed to delivering the highest standard of care, and SafeQuest is our way of demonstrating that commitment. Through our many patient safety and quality improvement initiatives we are focused on improving patient experiences and outcomes. We measure our safety and quality performance across a range of categories and believe it is important to share our performance with the community.
Mater’s emergency department strives at all times to assess and care for patients based on their clinical need and within the recommended national guidelines. Mater Health Services has a dedicated team working in the emergency department of Mater Hospital Brisbane focused on improving the time patients wait to be assessed and treated. Patients are assigned a triage category of 1 to 5 reflecting the outcome of their initial assessment. This scale is used across all emergency departments in Australia.
Hand hygiene is a vitally important practice for healthcare workers and has a significant impact on reducing the spread of infections in hospitals; these are often called health care associated or acquired infections. Hand hygiene is a different way of thinking about safety and patient care and involves everyone working together including patients, visitors and health care workers.
At Mater, we have designed a program to help prevent patients from falling. All adult patients across Mater are assessed for their risk of falling on admission and each day they are in hospital. This allows us to ensure we can monitor patients more closely and use strategies to assist patients with their mobility and transfer when they are at increased risk of falls.
Mater hospitals are committed to ensuring patients who require medication receive the right medications at the right time. With around three million medications administered to patients annually when they are in our hospitals, Mater has a continuous focus on eliminating errors in medication prescription, dispensing, administration and patient monitoring.
Through our innovative Medication Safety Program, Mater has been able to focus on key aspects that contribute to ensuring the safety of patients receiving medications. We strive to continuously improve our performance using measures that are benchmarked across other Australian hospitals.
Pressure injuries (also known as pressure ulcers, bed sores and pressure sores) are blisters and breaks in the skin which can occur when patients spend long periods of time in one position, either in bed or in a chair. Mater has developed multiple strategies to prevent patients at risk of developing pressure injuries.
